Winter Season Brings New Events To The Boston Frog Pond

Free Skating Spectacular Opens the Season November 18
$2 College Night every Tuesday – A Boston Frog Pond Event

The Boston Common Frog Pond skating season officially gets underway Friday, November 18th at 5:30pm with an Opening Night Skating Spectacular:  “Skating under the Stars”, a free show open to the public.  Mayor Thomas M.  Menino, Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia M. Pollak, and The Skating Club of Boston President Joseph Blount will host this year’s festivities.  The Skating Spectacular will feature skating stars from Boston and beyond, including pairs teams, synchronized skating and champion singles skaters, as well as up and coming students from the Frog Pond’s Skating Academy.  Frog Pond Freddie and other special guests will be on hand for a fun-filled evening.  After the show, the rink will officially open for public skating for the season.

$2 College Night premieres this season with a special night of skating for college students every Tuesday beginning November 15 from 5-9pm (except 12/27 and 2/21/12).  Students from all Boston-area campuses are invited to come down for ice skating for a special price of $2.00 with current student i.d.   Equipment rentals will be available on-site for those who do not have their own skates.  WERS 88.9 FM will provide the music on College Night, treating folks to a lively programming mix including indie rock, alternative, reggae, hip hop, and some surprises!

Tree Lighting Pre-Show at Frog Pond Skating Rink On December 1, the Frog Pond will be presenting a holiday skating show at the Frog Pond at 5:00pm prior to the Official Tree Lighting.  The Frog Pond will host local and national champion figure skaters, pairs and dance couples, and entertaining holiday performances from Skating Academy students.  And the Frog Pond will again be part of Boston’s First Night celebration on December 31st at 6:00pm with a presentation of skating performances for the festivities.

During open hours for the Frog Pond, the Frog Pond Café will be serving up seasonal fare including a grilled cheese bar, hearty soups, Belgian waffles made to order, along with comfort food for blustery days.

The Boston Common Frog Pond is managed through a public-private partnership between The Skating Club of Boston and the Boston Parks Department.  The partnership’s mission is to manage the Frog Pond for the benefit of Bostonians and visitors alike, and to provide recreational activities year-round at a customer-friendly destination in the heart of America’s oldest public park.
